Welcome to the University of Denver's Transgender Community Support and Resources page; otherwise known as our "Trans Hub"!

This hub is a resource for current, past and prospective University students, faculty and staff, who are Transgender, non-binary, or otherwise gender expansive.

On this website, we use the umbrella term “Trans” to encompass these diverse range of identities. We recognize that labels are very personal and fluid, and that this term may not fully cover the range of everyone’s experience—but we do mean to use it in the most inclusive way possible.

While every individual’s journey is unique and different, The Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, along with campus partners provide this Guide to help answer some questions related to being Trans and/or transitioning on campus.

These pages are meant to grow and expand as we continue to engage alongside and with our Trans community. If there is something you would like us to add, consider, or shift, please let us know here.

Pride Closet Now Open!

The Pride Closet is a free resource for LGBTQ+ graduate and undergraduate students. Students can get hygiene products, casual clothes and gender-affirming clothes at no cost! Currently, we have binders, and, in the future, we'll also have tucking underwear and packing underwear.

The closet is located in Driscoll Commons, Suite 1, and is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

The Pride Closet is not accepting donations at this time.

Bathrooms & Locker Rooms

Below is a growing list of all the single occupancy and/or All-Gender bathrooms on campus. (Note: Menstruation products are available in most All-Gender Restrooms.)

“All-Gender Restrooms” is a filter you can apply to the online campus maps: i76.feelzanzibar.com/maps

DU is also working to add additional All-Gender spaces as existing infrastructure, available funds, and/or larger renovations allow. A particular focus is on “bathroom deserts”—areas of campus where there are not already All- Gender restrooms available, usually in clusters of older facilities. Locker Rooms

University policy and local law prohibits discrimination based on gender identity and gender expression. However, DU has no specific policy regarding gender-labeled bath or locker rooms usage on campus. We encourage everyone to use the restroom and locker rooms they feel most comfortable in, as we pursue an affirming campus use policy, and additional facilities options.

FYI, if you have a Ritchie Gold-level membership you can access locker rooms that have more private spaces than general membership spaces.

All-gender, single stall showers are also available in several other buildings, including Ruffatto Hall top floor, the 1st & 3rd floors of the Community Commons, and others.

Pronoun Changes in Canvas and Banner

University Update

Changes can be made starting March 27th

Please note that the list of pronouns in the Banner user profile has been recently expanded to 15 unique choices. You can visit your My4D page to make edits to your Banner profile. At the start of the Spring Quarter, the pronoun choices in the Banner user profile will feed directly in the Canvas user profile. Faculty and students will not be able to change their pronouns in Canvas after March 27th, 2023. If you would like to give feedback on the pronoun choices in Banner, please fill out this form.
We have received a lot of feedback and wanted to provide clarification:
Students, faculty, and staff will continue to be able to change their pronouns after March 27th. What is changing is the platform we all use to submit any pronoun changes.
Currently the pronoun field in Canvas (DU’s Learning Management System) and Banner (DU’s central database) do not read across each other. This has led to a lot of confusion and hurt, as students have changed their pronouns in Canvas, but that change hasn’t migrated to other systems at the university. Starting in Spring Quarter, the “pronouns” field in Banner (what most of us know as the My4D portal) will begin to migrate to Canvas. This will allow for students to change their pronouns at the central university level and for it to feed across platforms. Our hope is that this provides students, faculty, and staff with a more seamless and affirming experience. In preparing for this shift, we have expanded the list of available pronouns in Banner, providing the DU community with more options. We will continue to evaluate that list of options each quarter and work to routinely expand the list.

Campus Processes

Scholarships, Financial Aid & Payroll

As potentially taxable financial transactions and legal contracts, nearly all University-handled financial transactions must be conducted under your legal name. In many cases, offices such as Financial Aid and Student Employment can communicate using your chosen name (and pronouns); but legal documents will still reflect your legal name.
If you choose to legally change your name and gender markers, you can then update University records with the new legal documents. This will only update campus records; you will also need to notify other financials providers and services (external scholarship providers, loan services, banks, etc.) directly.

Student ID Card & RTD Passes

Student ID Card
The ID printing system will automatically pull your first and last name from the DU information platform. You can request for your “preferred first name” to be used instead; simply let the ID office know prior to printing. In order to use a preferred name, you must have added that name into the DU system and wait about 24 hours for the systems to fully update. While getting an updated card, don’t forget you can also update your picture! Your DU ID card can also be used as an ATM card if you have accounts with US Bank, which has an on-campus location in Driscoll Commons. If US Bank has your legal info on file, your DU ID, with preferred first name, works for them! Currently, DU does not include pronouns on ID cards. This option is being explored, but we do not have an ETA.
FAQs:
What is a preferred first name? For more information on naming conventions visit the Registrar’s site.
How do I update my preferred first name? To review, add, or your preferred first name, you need to sign in to your My4D account. Under the link "my personal profile" you can add or change your preferred first name. Hint: this is also where you can change your pronouns and gender identification.
What if I have legally changed my name? Can I get an updated card too? Yes, of course. Again, make sure that your legal name has been changed in the DU system. Wait 24 hours, and then take your current ID card to the office for a replacement.
How much will a new ID cost? If you already have an ID, you can simply bring it in and ask for a replacement. Replacements due to name change are free. If you lost your card, then you will have to pay a replacement fee. To read more about ID card policies, visit the ID Card Office site.
Where is the ID Card Office located? The ID office is located on the ground floor of Driscoll Commons, and online at http://i76.feelzanzibar.com/pioneercard.
(Also note that you can remove the “Pioneer” moniker from your Student ID by request when reprinting.)
RTD Passes
Most students and employees are provided with RTD-Denver (public transportation) passes. RTD Passes use the same name fields and are controlled by RTD; per their requirements we cannot add preferred names or pronouns to the cards.
Email Address

You will be automatically assigned an official DU email address ending in @feelzanzibar.com (typically legal firstname.lastname@feelzanzibar.com). While your core username will be permanently based on your 1st application legal name info, you can create an alias (alternative address) for your DU email address by making a request through online service ticket at support.feelzanzibar.com or calling 303.871.4700.
Classroom

Course registration information will be your legal name by default, though your registered Preferred First Name will also show on course rosters. We hope to eventually have this same information appear on Canvas, and for the Chosen/ Professional Name to replace legal name entirely.
We encourage instructors to have class members do self-introductions during the first meeting(s), so that everyone can indicate what their name (and pronouns).
Zoom
Follow these instructions on how to share your pronouns in your profile, including turning the feature on/off for meetings/webinars: zoom support page.

Diploma, Graduation Program & Transcripts Campus Records

Transcripts are generally considered legal documents (verified evidence of education credentials) and must be issued under your current legal name. This can be updated and re-issued if you later legally change your name.
However, diplomas and graduation ceremony printed programs are generally not legal documents, and do not have to be printed with your legal name. When applying for graduation, all students have the opportunity to enter the name they wish to have printed on their diploma, which will also appear in printed programs. Other Campus Records

DU is actively working on a simpler and consistent method for updating name and gender marker information across the many software systems across campus. In the meanwhile, there will be case-by-case fixing and notifying. Please check with the Division of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion if you have specific questions or would like help navigating these systems by emailing inclusion@feelzanzibar.com.

Resourceful Offices and Departments

Health & Counseling Center (HCC)

The HCC provides high quality, evidence based inclusive health care for graduate and undergraduate transgender and gender diverse students. Their approach, including the use of gender affirming language, weight-inclusive and trauma informed practice, guides their informed consent model for students who wish to socially transition, initiate and/or continue gender affirming hormones, seek surgical consultation for gender affirmation surgery, or just need support in navigating the healthcare system.

Housing

All-Gender aligns with Housing & Residential Education's (HRE) Diversity Statement and creates an LGBTQ+ community living environment for DU students of all orientations, gender identities, and gender expressions--including LGBTQ+ allies. All-Gender housing is a popular choice for students who seek roommate or suitemate groups outside of the traditionally gendered-structure and acknowledges that identities exist on a spectrum. Each suite includes a single user gender-neutral restroom and the floor has a shared kitchen.

The Cultural Center & Pride Lounge

The DU Cultural Center strives to create an environment where students of color, students of marginalized faiths, and LGBTQ+ students can critically engage their historical legacies, while enhancing their educational, intellectual and personal/ professional interest as it relates to race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, socioeconomic, and cultural sensibilities; while providing a physical safe haven for respite and dialogue as they navigate their journey at DU. The Cultural Center hosts regular LGBTQ+ social and support events.

Health Promotion & Thrive at DU The Department of Health Promotion envisions a future where every member of the DU community will have the opportunity to learn, connect, and thrive in a supportive campus community. Thrive is home to DU’s health education team, including inclusive sexual health! They are also your campus resource for STI-testing and free/low-cost safer sex supplies. They are located on the 3rd floor of the Community Commons in Suite 3200.

Center for Advocacy, Prevention & Empowerment (CAPE)

CAPE offers free and confidential supports for victims of sexual assault, relationship violence, stalking, and/or sexual harassment to all students. We can connect folks to safe housing, help talk through reporting options, access medical care, obtain financial or academic support, or simply be a safe and confidential place to talk. Student Outreach & Support (SOS)

SOS helps students succeed by connecting them to resources, developing a plan of action to meet their goals, and navigating challenging situations. The SOS staff creates an inclusive and welcoming environment for students to develop skills in self-awareness, self-advocacy, resilience, and navigation to maximize their educational experience. Located in the Community Commons 3rd Floor.
